Is Rape Against men Silenced in India?
The Silenced Suffering: Rape Against Men in IndiaA Hidden Epidemic
In a conservative country like India, rape against male victims is grossly underreported and highly stigmatized. Though sexual violence against women has received quite a great deal of attention, one needs to realize that even men can become victims of rape and other forms of sexual assault. Such silences are a result of certain societal stereotypes, cultural taboos, and the fear of being ridiculed or disbelieved.
Rape of men in India is a grossly underreported and stigmatized issue. Though sexual violence has been discussed primarily as an issue involving women, it needs to be realized that men can indeed become victims of rape and sexual assault. Centered around societal stereotypes, cultural taboos, and the fear of ridicule or disbelief, this is one such issue which has been shrouded in silence.
Most men remain silent after being raped or sexually assaulted because of social stigma. Traditional male socialization often requires men to be strong and capable; therefore, victimization threatens masculine stereotypes. There is also a fear that referring to self as a victim of sexual assault may make him appear "weak" or "less than a man".
Male victims seldom report such incidents due to the lack of encouragement from friends, relatives, and law enforcement agencies. Most of them will be apprehensive that they would not be believed and may even blame them for the incident. The legal system may also not be well prepared to deal with such cases of rape against men, which may lead to delays, probable bad treatment, and no justice.
Approaching the issue of rape against men in India would involve some serious steps: creating awareness among people about the fact that men can get raped, too, to eliminate stereotypes that may harm and isolate the victim and create a non supportive atmosphere for them; changing laws and policies to effectively deliver justice to male victims, giving due seriousness to cases related to them as it would be in cases related to female victims.
Other important things involve the provision of specialist support services for the male victims themselves, providing emotional support, counseling, and even legal advice. In addition to these, societal attitudes and stereotypes regarding masculinity and victimhood need to be challenged through education, awareness campaigns, and cultural change.
It has been a long time and the stigma needs to be broken: it is high time the silence regarding rape against men in India was broken. Let us acknowledge that there is a problem, support each other in the best possible way, and build an advocate that brings change so that all victims of sexual assault will get the due justice and support which every other victim receives.
